Pizza vs. Cereal

“You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories. However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.” Chelsey Amer, a private practice nutritionist based in New York City, told USA TODAY. The average cereal will provide a few grams of protein and fiber, but have a large amount of sugar and calories. Once you add in the milk to your cereal and take account the realistic amount you actually dump into your bowl compared to the serving size, you are looking at a lot more calories and a lot more sugar.

On the other side, pizza’s basic ingredients include mozzarella cheese for a good source of protein and calcium, tomato sauce for a good source of vitamins A and C. It has both a quick energy boost from the carbohydrates and lasting energy from the protein and fiber. It’s an added bonus if the pizza has additional toppings on top like vegetables or meats to add in some nutritious value. When compared to most bowls of sugary flakes it is a much more balanced meal.

Now, that’s not to say that pizza is the healthiest option for breakfast, or is better than every cereal, but you can eat happy knowing that you are likely consuming something for breakfast that is healthier than a good chunk of the population.
