What’s the Difference Between a Stromboli and a Calzone?

stom-calz

Sam & Louie’s is well known for New York style, hand-tossed pizza, but we also take pride in the many options we have for our customers.

At every Sam & Louie’s location you’ll find a menu full of Italian favorites, including our delicious Stromboli and calzones.

Calzones and Stromboli are cornerstones of our menu, but they often get confused for each other.

These are two menu items that we want you to know very well, so let’s set the record straight.

What’s the difference between the Stromboli and calzone?

Both the Stromboli and calzone are like cousins to the pizza. The basic ingredients are largely the same: dough, cheese, meats and veggies.

But the two each have a unique presentation and present two completely different eating experiences.

Let’s start with the calzone.

What’s a Calzone?

calzone-1

Think of a calzone as a stuffed pizza.

Calzones are crescent moon-shaped and filled with a variety of cheeses, along with toppings found on many pizzas. The calzone dough is kneaded shut at the end with the ingredients inside and baked until golden brown.

When it graces your table, you can eat it with a fork and knife, or you can pick it up and chow down on that delicious, football-shaped creation with your hands. Either way, you’ll love it!

Ok, so what’s a Stromboli?

stromboli-1

Nazzareno “Nat” Romano is credited with inventing Stromboli in 1950.

Stromboli got its name from a movie starring Ingrid Bergman, which Mr. Romano thought of when he was pressured to title his delicious creation on the spot.

Where a calzone is stuffed, a Stromboli is rolled up. Your choice of cheese, veggies and meats are placed on flat dough and twisted into a cylinder, then baked.

What about the sauce? Well, at Sam & Louie’s, we’ve got our own way of saucing Stromboli.
We take hearty tomato sauce and slather it on top. Once you eat Stromboli our way, you’ll never go back.
